The BAPS Board (Biomechanical Ankle Platform System) is a professional rehabilitation system designed to provide controlled, progressive exercise for the foot, ankle, knee, and lower extremity. Widely used in physical therapy and sports medicine, the BAPS Board supports balance, proprioception, range of motion, strength, and neuromuscular rehabilitation through adjustable multi-axial movement.
The system uses five progressively sized hemispherical pivot balls to change the board's range of motion and level of challenge. Weight rods and resistance plates can also be used to progressively increase resistance as rehabilitation advances.
Designed for closed kinetic chain exercise, the BAPS Board provides physical therapists and rehabilitation professionals with a highly adjustable platform for progressing patients from controlled range-of-motion exercises to more challenging balance, proprioception, and strengthening activities.
Professional BAPS Board for Lower-Extremity Rehabilitation
The BAPS Board is designed to create controlled and predictable movement challenges for lower-extremity rehabilitation. By changing the pivot ball beneath the platform and adjusting resistance, clinicians can progressively modify the amount of motion and difficulty throughout a rehabilitation program.
This makes the Biomechanical Ankle Platform System particularly useful when clinicians need greater control over progression than a conventional balance or wobble board can provide.
Balance, Proprioception and Neuromuscular Training
Injury, surgery, and periods of immobilization can affect balance, proprioception, strength, and neuromuscular control. The BAPS Board provides a structured way to progressively challenge these components of lower-extremity rehabilitation.
Its multi-axial movement allows clinicians to incorporate controlled balance and proprioception exercises while progressively adjusting range of motion and resistance according to the patient's rehabilitation program.
Five Progressive Levels of Range of Motion
The BAPS system includes five progressively sized hemispherical pivot balls. Changing the ball beneath the board alters the platform's movement and provides progressively greater range-of-motion challenges.
This five-level system allows rehabilitation professionals to begin with a more controlled movement pattern and progressively increase the challenge as balance, mobility, strength, and neuromuscular control improve.
- Five progressively sized hemispherical pivot balls
- Adjustable range-of-motion challenge
- Progressive difficulty for rehabilitation programs
- Controlled multi-directional platform movement
- Designed to support gradual patient progression
Adjustable Resistance with Weight Rods and Plates
In addition to changing the pivot ball, the BAPS Board allows resistance to be adjusted using weight rods and plates. The board provides five weight rod socket locations, allowing resistance to be positioned strategically according to the exercise and rehabilitation objective.
The complete system includes two weight rods and four 2.5 lb weight plates, providing up to 10 lbs. of included resistance for progressive strengthening exercises.
This combination of adjustable range of motion and resistance gives clinicians multiple ways to progress exercise as the patient's lower-extremity function improves.
Reversible Design for Right or Left Foot
The BAPS Board is designed to accommodate rehabilitation of either lower extremity. The board provides positioning for the right or left foot, helping clinicians properly align the patient over the platform for the selected exercise.
Correct positioning allows the multi-axial movement of the board to be incorporated into structured rehabilitation exercises targeting the foot, ankle, lower leg, knee, and related kinetic chain.
Closed Kinetic Chain Rehabilitation
The BAPS Board is designed for closed kinetic chain exercise, allowing the lower extremity to be challenged while the foot remains positioned on the platform.
This approach allows rehabilitation professionals to incorporate simultaneous range-of-motion, strengthening, balance, proprioception, and neuromuscular exercises into a progressive lower-extremity rehabilitation program.
